2021 Nick Vavas 'Time to Make a Difference' Scholarship Winners

By Denise Fisher

Each year since 2012, the Farmingville HIlls Chamber of Commerce has awarded scholarships to the winners of an essay contest. The winning Sachem East High School Senior receives a $500 scholarship. The winner was chosen from essays submitted on the Chamber's website.

Michael Wentz, FHCC President, offers congratulations to the winners and comments; "During these unprecedented times it was important that the Chamber continued to offer a scholarship to Sachem East seniors. Despite the hardships, our business organization felt it was imperative to continue to advance the general welfare and prosperity of the Farmingville area."

First place winner Fatima Gonzalez will be attending Fashion Institute of Technology. In her winning 'Make a Difference' essay entry, she says; " I have decided to take action and become an active member of the Farmingville youth civic. I am ready to give back and help lift up those who are down, such as I was not too long ago. Not to mention the amazing opportunities, relations and experiences it helps foster. " The chamber is proud to award to Fatima, a $500 scholarship check. We look forward to her many future contributions to the Farmingville community she loves.

Second and Third place contest winners will receive $500 scholarships from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 400, Farmingville.

Second place winner Sierra Edwards will be attending Suffolk Community Collage. Sierra says, " A community depends on those who live in it to care about it, support it and work together to make it a success. By that I mean taking an interest in the people within that that community, keeping it clean and thriving. Support local business and take an interest in town activities. In addition to working to better your community you need to be a positive role model. ". Her community minded attitude no doubt makes her family proud.

Third place winner Nina Matusiak will be attending Sienna College. Says Nina, in her essay, "Helping out those who live in the community is a huge part in making a difference. The people who live in a community need to take care of each other and help one another out." Indeed, Nina is on teh right track to being a great adult member of this community.

The scholarship awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, July 27th, 2021 at the Farmingville Flicks, at 7 pm. It was held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 400, Farmingville, NY (across from the Suffolk Community College lot) during Farmingville Flicks Night!.

We wish all the winners our sincere congratulations and best of luck for bright and successful futures!
